Step Up the DVD Movie Credits: Flashing Light Productions, "Step Up" the DVD produced by Josh Coville and Chad Oakley. Copyright @ 2005 Movie Website: Step Up the DVD website It was a cool and humid winter evening at DaKine Burritos in Satellite Beach. The premier showing of Step Up the DVD was about to start. While Dakine's was troubleshooting a video problem, Josh, the filmmaker, was nervously pacing back and forth. Understandably, the amount of work to edit and mix this movie, the countless hours of travelling and filming...the financing and rushing to meet the deadline of the release date...to a premiere viewing between friends and strangers alike...has to make one nervous. I also felt a bit of anticipation and was eager to see Josh's new film. Would I like it? Would others? Or, would people hate it and walk out... Fortunately, Josh has made a film that really can’t be criticized all that much! What I saw in the movie is wave after wave…after wave, of amazing surfing. Step Up the DVD, sticks to its roots and is strictly all surfing. And, the surfing is quite impressive! Opposite to the typical surf film, there is no ego massaging, no comedy relief skits, soulful interludes, or, product endorsements. Step Up is pure unadulterated surfing at its finest! The quick edited scenes are a relentless onslaught of ‘performance’ style surfing. All shortboards in Step Up and everyone has their ‘A’ game on. The film showcases seasoned pros and the current young surfers that are entering, or, Stepping Up, to the pro scene. This film is aptly named. The soundtrack is of various independent bands. The music is hard driving, loud, and always changing…Straight ahead Rock-n-Roll…perfect for this surf flick! What stands out in Step Up is the surfing on this film. Every progressive surfing move is well represented in Step Up. Extreme death defying Pipeline drops, to deep barrel rides, to the latest in the aerial assaults. Step Up represents the current state of performance surfing! Most of the film features East Coast riders. CJ and Damian Hobgood are everywhere on Step Up. From Pipeline, to Cloudbreak, to the Inlet, to some great Reef Road surf, the Hobgoods show what it takes to ‘Step Up’. Other surfers are highlighted with great footage from all parts of the world. The DVD sleeve says it is filmed in Tahiti, Fiji, Indo, Japan, Hawaii, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, California, North Carolina, and Florida. Thus, the wave varies from one scene to the next. I highly recommend Step Up, it’s a good way to get that adrenaline pumping and go surfing! The DVD sleeve claims, “A High Energy Movie.” Step Up is a high energy movie with fast paced music and equally impressive surfing! "High Energy" describes Step Up to a tee! I stopped Josh that night at Dakines from his nervous pace and asked him why he made a movie like this. His response was, “…for people to get fired up before surfing…to Step Up…” Step Up will do that, adrenalize and inspire you to go surfing. Back to We Are Water Home Page
