Pro Surf Ramblings

The Brazil Men’s WCT contest finished up this past week with Mick Fanning taking the victory. Damien Hobgood was also in the final but just couldn’t keep up with the blazing surfing of Mick Fanning. Fanning has got to be one of the fastest surfers I have ever seen.

Also as a side note, the Hobgood twins had to surf against each other in the QuarterFinals with Damien taking the heat.

The contest scene moves to Hawaii now. The next contest is the Women with the title race still up in the air. The Men start in December with, of course, Kelly Slater having all ready wrapped up the title race.

Also, previously mentioned on Fresh Friday (Poor Sportsmanship by Andy Irons), Andy Irons had another temper tantrum with losing in Brazil. Reportedly, after losing a heat he broke his board over the knee and avoided the press and even his girlfriend and went into hiding. The ASP looks to fine Andy over his behavior by not offering himself to the media after the heat. Andy is looking to solidify his reputation as being a sore loser with this. It will be interesting to see how he recovers from this in the Hawaii contest scene. He will be on his home turf and I’m sure it will get heated for the Pipeline contest. So far, it has been reported that Kelly Slater will compete in Hawaii. So, with the Title Race wrapped up it will be interesting to see the interaction between Irons and Slater.

The 2006 Nova Schin Festival in Brazil presented by Billabong.

Quarterfinal number one was a showdown between the brothers Hobgood. With howling wind and solid 4-6ft sets CJ received the wrong end of the stick and leaves the event in equal 5th place.

In conditions resembling a washing machine Damien Hobgood showed his twin brother CJ it was all business in their quarterfinal exchange. Damien advanced into the semifinals while CJ had to be content with rooting for his brother from the bleachers.

After the brother-to-brother match up, defending champion of the Nova Schin Festival Damien Hobgood went on to eliminate Hawaiian Fred Pattachia and prepares to head out to the finals.

Say hello to the 2006 Nova Schin Festival champion, Mick "Eugene" Fanning. In the finals, Fanning immediately put a stop of Damien Hobgood's run of good form when he rode 5 waves in the first 10 minutes leaving him in a combo situation of 18.78 at heat end.

Winner of the Nova Schin Festival, Australian Mick Fanning, gets downed with Foster’s by runner-up Damien Hobgood, and equal third Bobby Martinez and Phillip Macdonald!

Mick Fanning moved into second place on the ASP Fosters World Tour rankings with his win in the Nova Schin Festival 2006 presented by Billabong.

Spectators who showed up on the final wonderful sunny day of the Nova Schin Festival squeeze together to get the best view of Mick Fanning being crowned the 2006 champion.

Pier Talk

I don't have much to say on this issue of Pier Talk. But, check out this photo of Kelly Slater in Australia. Sorry there is no photo credit but I found it on an Australian website and couldn't find a contact or E-mail. If you know who took it let me know so I can apply credit to the photo. Also, if you want to get any words out there let me know as sometimes (like today) I suffer from writer's block.

Pier Talk is for anything and everything about surfing and is an editorial/opinion. So, anything goes! Check out last week's Pier Talk by Aloha Brad: Pier Talk Australia Rules!

We Are Water Happenings

Wow, we had a couple of excellent surf days this past week. Finally. The winds were super strong onshore last weekend with it finally cleaning up on Tuesday and Wednesday. Wednesday morning at dawn was some of the best surf of the year. It was around 4-6 feet with oil-slick glass. The winds eventually turned strong offshore and held it back some, but some of those waves I caught early dawn go down as some of the funnest in a long time. We have been wave starved this Fall season and that was what was needed to remind, at least me, that surfing is really fun!

I’m starting a new job in two weeks so I won’t have as much time to update We Are Water. My current plans are to keep it going and update when I have time. I’ve been working on We Are Water for two years and it has been fun doing it. I won’t have as much free time after next week, so bare with me if updates don’t come as frequent.

I compiled photos for Kelly Slater’s 2006 Homecoming after his 8th World Title win. Don Eggert captured it in his photos. Thanks Don! Kelly Slater 2006 Homecoming

Christa Alves starts up the Women’s WQS contest scene in January and we wish her the best. I’m also looking for the next interviewee as I really enjoy doing them. It is interesting to get to know other surfers and what their interests are. Christa Alves Interview

Eric "Kneeblaster" Carson and Mark "Man- O-War" Wessling will team up to present the history of kneeboarding and the development and construction of the Spoon. Mark Wessling will have one of his new spoons on hand to show. Along with all that, there will be an archival DVD presentation of George Greenough's tube footage, spoon riding, and mat riding. This is a unique opportunity to step into the world of kneeboarding for deeper understanding and pure stoke. A few bucks donation to the museum, and you're in!
