The Brasil ASP Men’s contest has started and the surf has not been up to par. There have been a few layover days this past week. However, a new swell is forecasted to come in for Saturday. Kelly Slater is a no show for this contest which makes it semi-anti-climatic. However, it is a WCT event and there are many surfers that need to qualify for next year.

More coverage along with live webcast can be found here: Brazil 2006 WCT Men's contest Main Index

Here is an interesting news story. KELLY SLATER is being pushed towards a 10th world title by a secret $10 million deal.: $10m deal to keep Slater

OPINION/EDITORIAL - Everyone Should Help Quiksilver Pay Slater $10 Million

Kelly Slater did show up for his brother’s contest last week in Cocoa Beach. The World Skin Cancer contest got pretty good press in the local paper and from local photographers. I made a page of Don Eggert's photos. Here is the link over on the Featured artist. Don got some great shots of Slater’s homecoming. Kelly Slater 2006 Cocoa Beach Homecoming by Don Eggert

Fresh off his second WCT victory this year, Bobby Martinez will be the man to beat at the Nova Schin Festival.

The view from the contestants area, this is what you’d be looking at if you were one of the top 44.

The Hobgood twins kick back in the contestant’s area before their round one heat at Imbituba.

Round one of the Nova Schin Festival provided spectators with great viewing, both in and out the water.

Greg Emslie (South Africa) caused an early upset in round one when he defeated current ASP World number 4 Joel Parkinson (Australia). Parkinson was left needing a near perfect score of 9.5 at heat finish and will now surf round two while Emslie enjoys a break from competition.

Brasilian Adriano de Souza tried everything to overcome a dominant Mick Fanning in round one but lost out by a mere 1.15.

Troy Brooks overcame a charging CJ Hobgood to end round one with the third highest heat score of 16.17. Brooks enjoys a break from competition while Hobgood and Jarrad Howse surf round two.

Renato Galvao can be proud of his efforts to keep the Brasilian flag flying in round two of the Nova Schin Festival. Galvao, narrowly loosing to Tom Whitaker by 0.16 of point, leaves the event in equal 33rd and US$4000 richer.

My Friend Brad who lives on Oahu just graduated from Airline school and is now a stewardess...er, Flight Attendent. He now gets to fly wherever Hawaii Airlines goes. In High School we always talked about moving to Australia and living the surfer's dream. I got this email from him this past week. He finally made it!

Just spent 5 days in Sydney...to all my fellow American friends..we should all have our heads examined for putting up with the crap that comes along with our great country...Oz actually has genuinely friendly people..women who are even friendlier..and an emphasis on play first, work next..its clean..immigration is completely under control..so aussies have first crack at good jobs, yet its more multicultural than most U.S cities..there is respect for the country by immigrants because of the strictness...great beaches, surf, climate...did I mention friendly...America has become a rude, money hungry, conservative, trendy youth following machine that seems intent on inviting people to come abuse our country...Did I mention that sampling great beer often is a traditional pastime and not a reason to create MADD, more laws, and a paranoid shift to a healthy/pure/religious wannabe society that seeks solace in cheesburgers....I saw no police, no bums, and there are no alcoholics in OZ..just good clean fun...did I mention women who are more interested in having fun than looking for the next walking ATM...The country of the future..or is that now...just a diatribe from someone who never quite felt comfortable in my own society and sees the future of the U.S. as pretty vacant..Don't worry..there's no one good to vote for...keep rockin....

Aloha
Brad

We Are Water Happenings

As we are in the first week of November we can look back and say that October was below average for surfing months in Florida. October is typically our best month. However, this past October was a disappointment. There were a few fun days, however, nothing to really look back on and be memorable.

Hopefully we get out of this small wave cycle and we make up for it in November and sliding into the winter months.

The Sebastian King of the Peak is this weekend. More info can be found here: Seb. King of the Peak 2006

Also, the Christa Alves interview went well over 1000 viewers on the ole’ hit counter. Christa is an up and coming professional surfer who looks to enter the WQS circuit starting in January. If you haven’t checked it out yet, here is the link: Christa Alves Interview

For future articles, Bill Burbage returned from his second boat trip to Indo and has supplied hundreds of photos. I’m currently sorting them out and picking the best ones. Hopefully I can get them out this week. Bill’s first boat trip photos are here: 2005 Indo Boat Trip

Also, logjammer says he is working on a new one. Check out his past articles here: Drifting by logjammer

I’m also thinking of who to interview next. If you have a suggestion let me know. I want to feature a surf artist next. This website is just a hobby for me and I have found doing the interviews are pretty fun to do.

Also, I watched John Hearin’s presentation for a Cocoa Beach Artificial Surfing Reef to Brevard County Commissioners on Tuesday. The presentation went for 14 minutes and all the commissioners were in favor of pursuing more information. They elected to fund a feasibility study to continue this effort. Also, there is a new webpage for the ASR and it is here: http://www.spacecoastreef.com/

I have 2ndlight.com T-shirts available if you are interested: 2ndlight.com Tee shirts

Thanks for Checking out We Are Water
