Surf Sportsmanship

As a fan of many other sports and especially of football, one thing that is important is sportsmanship.

If you put it in perspective it is just a game.

Showing frustrations of losing as hitting someone or like recently as Andy Irons did on Thursday shows poor sportsmanship.

With a minute to go in his final heat Andy Irons only needed a 6.3 point ride to win the heat. However, in frustration and probably sensing that the wave wasn’t good enough, he stood up switch foot and rode the wave in a kook stance.

Towards the end of the wave he motioned that of jacking off.

In my opinion, this showed very poor sportsmanship. Sure he was frustrated he didn’t catch the wave he needed, but to do this in front of an International audience was in poor character.

As he walked up the beach he quickly ran in front of the web-cam and disappeared from view. Most true champions would take a loss with grace and shake the victors hand.

Andy showed his true colors with the loss and dropping out of the Title race.

Andy Irons is definitely great at surfing but is not great at being a sportsman.

Needless to say the $10,000 Sean Slater Invitational surfing contest (Oct. 27-28 behind the Cocoa Beach Holiday Inn) will be a huge celebration for Kelly in winning the title.
