Pro Surf Ramblings

Now that the Men’s World Title race has been decided I guess the remaining two contest will be anti-climatic. If you are just tuning in Kelly Slater won the 2006 Men’s ASP World Title last Friday in Spain. This makes it number 8 for his career. It is an amazing feat for any sportsman. To be able to sustain his level of surfing for such a long time really is unmatched in any other sporting event. Surfing is in the background of the general public’s awareness, but when any sportswriter writes about the greatest athletes of all time…they better mention Mr. Kelly Slater!

What is next for Kelly Slater? Does he carry on and go for more? Does he even attend the Brazil and Pipeline contest? Or, does he retire (again) and move onto other non-surfing activities? Tiger Woods better keep an eye on Kelly Slater if he ever decides to compete in Golf!

Article by Rabbit Bartholomew, ASP President:

The Rise and Rise of Kelly Slater

Not only has Kelly Slater reiterated his position as World #1 but has well and truly stamped himself with the mantle of "Greatest Surfer of all Time" by securing his 8th World Crown. And he seemingly did it with such ease, clinching with his 8th effort on the 2006 Foster’s Men’s World Championship Tour. Read More of Article Here ASPWorldTour.Com

Winner of the Billabong Pro Mundaka Bobby Martinez is tossed off the harbor wall.

"This has definitely been my most consistent year ever," said Kelly Slater after claiming the title. "I’ve been much more relaxed this year. I’ve just been cruising and having fun and haven’t put so much pressure on myself.’

Joel Parkinson lost sight of his ASP World Title hopes when he was defeated by newly crowned eight times ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) in the semi finals of the Billabong Pro, Mundaka, Spain.

After Bobby Martinez disposed of Dean Morrison in their semi-final, the 24 year-old from Santa Barbara went on to defeat Kelly Slater in the final to earn his second event title of the year in his rookie year.

Both Kelly Slater and Bobby Martinez displayed perfect sportsmanship, sharing jokes and congratulating each other upon the completion of the Bilalbong Pro Mundaka.

In the spirit of tradition, the winner of the Billabong Pro Mundaka is tossed off the harbour wall and because Kelly Slater just won a world title, he is too.

Kelly Slater claims his eighth Fosters Men’s ASP World Championship title.

Congratulations Kelly Slater!!!

This past week We Are Water published a new interview with Christa Alves. It really had me thinking about Women and Surfing. Women surfing is sort of an enigma in itself. Surfing I think is generally thought of as a male sport. Sort of like the stereotype of when one thinks of a Doctor or a Nurse. In the stereotype a Doctor was mostly thought of as being a man and a Nurse a woman. In contrast, we can’t assume that men are the only players in this surfing game.

Women have come through the ranks and have earned their right to be thought of as surfers as well. When someone thinks of a surfer, like in a Hollywood movie, the stereotype immediate falls on the Jeff Spicoli character of the 1983 movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The part was played by Sean Penn and it was the typical long blond hair, air-head, drug using, and hippie like character. In some regards that stereotype is still true. However, Surfers nowadays make up just about every aspect of human race, sex, and/or nationality. Surfers can no longer be stereotyped as a Jeff Spicoli.

Women seem to be taking up the mantle of representing surfers in a better role. They seem to be more caring, respectful, and understand the rules of surfing etiquette much better than the young male ego does. I could be wrong, this is just my perspective and is an editorial which means it is an opinion piece. However, women are taking surfing where it is suppose to be, back to it's roots of having fun and not the Alpha-Male-dominant-must-crush-the-other-person-and-wave-mentality.

There are now many Women Surfing magazines and internet outlets. One website, California based JettyGirl.Com, seems to capture this essence or enigma of Women Surfing and I applaud them on their endeavors. It is similar to what We Are Water is trying to achieve, however, they have much better Webmastering skills than I! Check out JettyGirl.Com, they have excellent articles and insights on the World of Women Surfing:

We Are Water Happenings

The Surf the past week in East Central Florida has been small but rideable. October is typically our best surfing month but so far we have had just small rideable waves. I guess there is a reason why they call this area The Small Wave Capitol of the World! We are living up to that. We are still looking for our first winter type swells and the 2006 Hurricane Season has been a bust. Other than a couple big swells from Florence and Helene, this year is going down as a very bad year for swells. However, it has been small and rideable!

We Are Water is proud to publish an interview with Christa Alves. Christa is an aspiring professional surfer from Cocoa Beach who is moving on to International competition next year (2007). I’ve known Christa from surfing with her through the years and the brief conversations we have had out in the water. Christa seems to have the right attitude and skills to make it to the top. We Are Water wish her well in her surfing career. Check out the interview in the Waterview section here: The Christa Alves Interview

The $10,000 Sean Slater Invitational surfing contest (Oct. 27-28 behind the Cocoa Beach Holiday Inn) will be a huge celebration for Kelly in winning the title. Kelly Comes Home

Also, Ron Jons is hosting an autograph session for Kelly and friends on Thursday Oct. 26. More info here: Kelly Slater autograph session flyier

Last spring We Are Water offered up the Artificial Surfing Reef (ASR) for Cocoa Beach propaganda on this link here: ASR for Cocoa Beach proposals

This has been kicked up to the Brevard County level! John Hearin will be making a presentation to the County Commission on Tuesday October 31 at 9 AM concerning the CB artificial surfing reef.

This is a unique opportunity to voice your opinion on this subject! More info can be found here: ASR for Brevard County Meeting

Also, On September 28,2006 we lost another surfer, Chris Brown, to cancer. He was a regular at Lums and RCs. His family is having services and paddleout THIS SATURDAY Oct.21 at Pelican beach clubhouse at 3PM and a paddleout at sunset. More info here: Info for Chris Brown paddleout
