Pro Surf
Ramblings
The Women WCT contest number 2 finished this past week. This contest
didn't have live video but provided live audio of the event. Its
not as exciting to watch without the visual aid. The announcers
just couldn't capture in words what the ladies were doing on the
waves. Fortunately, the ASP provides photos and recap videos of
the event. The surf looked pretty good!
The next Men's WCT contest is at Fiji as well. Last year's contest
was won by Kelly Slater with some incredible surf for the contest.
After seeing the waves the ladies surfed on, hopefully, the Men
get the same type of swell!
Mens WCT contest #3: GLOBE WCT FIJI, May 21-June 2, 2006, Cloudbreak/Restaurants:
Tavarua/Namotu, Fiji

Tavarua is tropical paradise.
It’s the one place on the Women’s Tour that houses
all the athletes in one setting. The Roxy Pro in Fiji is the
favourite contest of the year amongst the pros.

In keeping with tradition, the nations represented
at the Roxy Pro present the people of Tavarua with a gift
of the root Kava.

Roxy Pro trialist Rosy
Hodge (SAfr) presents the Tavarua Island chief with a gift
of Kava roots during the opening ceremony for the Roxy Pro.

We spend a lot of time snorkelling
and swimming when there are no waves.

We travel between Tavarua and Namotu island
via little tin boats.

Sofia Mulanovich (Peru) won her second consecutive
Roxy Pro title in 2005. She defeated 6 times ASP world champion
Layne Beachley (Aus) in the final 30 seconds of the 35 minute
final.

The Roxy tower holds the judges,
commentators and live webcast crew.

While the safety craft provides
the surfers with a reassurance that if they get caught in
a tricky situation they will be plucked from danger it also
provides one of the best mobile view points.

A prime example of the waves on offer
during the final day of the Roxy Pro Fiji 2006.

Sofia Mulanovich (Peru) made it through
to the Quarter Finals of the Roxy Pro in epic 6-10 foot (2-3
meters) waves at Cloudbreak scoring 13.50 out of a possible
20 points but ultimately lost to Rebecca Woods (Australia)
by 1 point.

Six time ASP world champ Layne Beachley (Manly, NSW, Aus)
finished runner up in the Roxy Pro. In a repeat of the Roxy
Pro, the first event of the season last month in Australia,
Beachley faced Melanie Redman-Carr in the final but lost out
to the West Australian once again.
Reigning ASP world champ Chelsea Georgeson
finished equal third in the Roxy Pro. (photo

Rookie Silvana Lima was fearless in the heavy
6-10ft waves at Cloudbreak, pulling into some massive barrels.
The Brazilian finished equal fifth.

West Australian Claire Bevo Bevilacqua is
dwarfed by a mighty set at Cloudbreak. The diminutive powerhouse
fell to Roxy Pro runner-up Layne Beachley in the quarter finals.

Melanie Redman-Carr (right) made it two in
a row by winning the Roxy Pro in epic 6-10 foot (2-3 meters)
waves at Cloudbreak. Layne Beachley (NSW, Australia) couldn’t
hold off the devastating form of Redman-Carr to be placed
runner-up to her for the second time this year.

Hawaiian Rochelle Ballard (North Shore, Oahu)
scored one of the biggest & most perfect tube rides ever
ridden by a women at Cloudbreak, 10 seconds after the siren
blew signaling the end of her round 3 heat. If the wave had
been ridden during her heat, she would’ve scored a perfect
10 points to advance.

Pier Talk
The surf was really good for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday this past
week. A strong low pressure system off the coast of Nova Scotia
sent a long period ground swell and the conditions were oil-slick
glass in the morning. It was nice to finally surf on good clean
swell! Its not everyday in East Central Florida that we get surf
like that!
I overheard one surfer say it reminded him of California!
I've never been to California, but this swell was like staying
at a 5-star Hotel! Too bad the swell had to check out, but in my
mind it will never leave... (Sorry
for the bastardization of The Eagles.)
After surfing for an accumulation of 8 hours for this swell, I
was really feeling it on Wednesday. Sore muscles, achy
head, and just feeling down-right lathargic...its tough getting
old!
Going into this weekend and it looks like we have more swell to
surf on!
The winter swell season was not all that good, but this spring
season is making up for it!
Just like anything in life, there are ups and downs.
