Fresh Friday
for March 17th 2006
St. Patrick’s Day is today!
I didn’t know what St. Patrick’s
Day was other than an excuse to drink green beer.
Thankfully, with help from the internet, I learned that... "St.
Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is one of Christianity's most
widely known figures."
Was St.Patrick the original person to practice
localism by banishing all snakes from the Island of Ireland
(A rumor passed on from tradition)
?
As surfers we hate snakes. Snakes are those hidious
animals that swarm around crowded spots and purposely cut other
surfers off. I like this St. Patrick...we should ban all snakes
in our surf breaks...
The Irish culture is centered around a rich tradition
of oral legend and myth. We are
Water is trying to emulate this creed so it sounds like a
great excuse to drink a pint of Guinness!
Cheers!

I received great feedback from Dermot's An
Irish Summer Part Two article published last week. Just in
time to get in a little St. Patty Day’s Celebration mode!

Ramblings
I recieved an e-mail asking why there was no coverage
of the Women’s Contest that took place alongside the Men’s
last week. I’m sorry, the excitement of Kelly Slater's
2006 debut win overshadowed the women’s event. The drama
of history in the making with Slater’s unprecedented 8th World
Championship had me looking the other way. Last
Week's Fresh Friday Article
Women do surf and surf well.
I saw a few of the heats on the live webcast and
women’s surfing has really stepped up the past few
years.
(As a side-bar tangent, Olympic Women
Ice Skating was watched more than the Men. In contrast, for surfing,
the Men are watched more. Why is that?)
I’ll make up for it with ASPWorldTour.com
photos and commentary! I will make sure in future Fresh Friday articles
that I will cover the women’s events as well. Thanks for the
E-mail and reminding me that women surf too! Surfing has been a
male dominated sport for so long that it sometime's easy to overlook
that Women surf too!

Pier Talk
I recieved an e-mail from a good friend who moved
to Hawaii a few years back. It is a profound stream-of-consciousness
writing!
El-Perfecto for this Pier
Talk section of Fresh Friday!
Surfing has become like little league.
Even the pro circuit is a bit of a joke.
Don’t get me wrong, there are still
loads of empty surf to be caught, especially when it’s
bigger.
But if you watch the Triple Crown every year
its clear that many pros get there by surfing mediocre surf
around the world.
The top guys, different story.
Surfing is a young sport.
So we are currently seeing a generation of
surfers who have been pushed into surfing via parents. Almost
like little league or soccer.
When we grew up surfing in the seventies,
parents didn’t want you to become a surfer.
We were on our own, getting grommet abuse,
being at the beach on our own, getting into trouble, and learning
to cope with older groups of surfers and sometimes heavy surf.
Needless to say drugs, bails on the beach,
hanging with rock stars, and learning about sex, drugs, and
rock-n-roll.
Now its soccer vans turned into surfing vans.
Traveling with chaperone and surfing with
mom and dad, bitchin’ for them.
I will take the maverick days of surfing.
We were so lucky to grow up in that era of radical change
in the sport ('76-85 especially).
Now is the "Blue Crush/Wing Nut"
Era.
Much like the popularity boom in the 60's
after Gidget came out, Chicks, Longboards, and more
Kooks than at any other time have taken to
surfing...
The clothing engine that is responsible more
than anything was in the 70's a true necessity.
Quick trunks, etc...Now it’s
mainstream.
Da Hui is now a t-shirt outfit.
Nothing hardcore about that. Credit due, they made the buck
when they saw the chance...
So I'm 41 and sharing my old man experiences,
but I’m actually not bitter.
I am getting plenty of good surf. Just have
to look a little harder...the surfing boom will never stop
(unless boards get too expensive)
But, Hey? ....I do like to see chicks surfing,
the longboards a different story in good surf.
But I would definitely have one if I lived
E-coast...my viewpoint is strictly social commentary.
p.s. I saw Laird towing into Phantoms using
a helicopter as his tow vehicle. It was hilarious and awe
inspiring all at once. He wants to drop through the top of
the barrel.
So surfing will continue to grow in all the
best ways...
Aloha

We Are Water Happenings
We Are Water…WeAreH2O.Com
has been On-the-Air for a year now.
I’m looking to improve the overall look and add some pizzazz
in its next evolution. I’ve mostly concentrated on putting
out articles to build readership and to encourage others to help
participate. Its not easy to provide content by photography, literature,
editing, and webmastering. So, I would like to thank all the people
who have contributed to We Are Water
so far!
Thanks for making it an enjoyable year!

John Hearin gave his Artificial
Surfing Reef presentation to the City of Cocoa

we hear how it went!

Checking in on the ole’ hit counter,
last week’s Fresh Friday article
had over a thousand readers! I’m assuming the coverage of
Kelly Slater winning the first contest gave Fresh
Friday a few extra eye balls! I’ll check next week’s
hit counter to see if the Women's pro coverage does the same...
Fresh Friday
out for March 17th, 2006
Gone Surfing…hopefully with no snakes...
Long Live St. Patrick’s Day!
