Pro Surf Ramblings

The WCT tour is currently between contest One and Two of the 2006 season. The next contest is at Bells Beach, Australia. The dates for the contest are April 11-21.

Below are a few photos from the ASPWorldTour.Com that I thought were pretty good. I love surf photography (minus the Jones Factor), and the photos the ASP are putting out are pretty good. Check the ASP’s main page for more indepth information on the Tour:

Legendary Tom Carroll no longer is on tour but is doing color commentary on the on-line webcast.

CJ Hobgood with a nice lip smack.

CJ on a massive shorebreak.

Andy Irons Backdoor Cutback.

How to endure a flat spell.

Monday the 20th was the official First day of Spring.

Here in Florida we have just gone through a miserable winter season with an extended flat spell that seems like forever.

What to do?

In my 26 years of surfing Florida I have learned it is important to develop another hobby other than surfing! Other interests is what gets you through these lean times for surf.

It seems back when I was working a full-time job the extended flat spells were not as grueling. But, now that I’m a Stay-at-home-Mom, and work on a surfing website…the pain is worse.

For instance, seeing great surf at great spots around the World doesn’t help in the Jones Factor.

Surfing the internet is also not a very good hobby when it’s flat in Florida! Too many phantom swells show up in the long range swell models, and looking at surf photos/videos really makes the hunger to surf grow!

Also, I purposely don’t subscribe to Fuel TV or any surf magazines. I don’t need to be reminded that the surf is always better than here!

So, I’ve developed other hobbies, interests, and things-to-do to preoccupy my time.

Writing about surfing is one thing I’ve been doing with We Are Water and it is all fine-n-dandy to do when the surf is up. However, when its flat, I hate to have to write about it...Stop reminding me Dave...the waves are flat...erggg!

Also, browse back to the top of this page and scan that photo above! Double Erggg...We need Surf!

However, while talking about the weather, it is evident that it is springtime in Florida!

I’m going out to smell the roses…and wait for the first spring swell that looks to arrive next week!

We Are Water Happenings

We Are Water had a face lift this past week. A navigational bar was added to the top and bottom of each page along with a new section called WaterView.

WaterView looks to interview various participants in the enigma we call the Surf Tribe. First interviewee is Walt Barnes of Walt's Surf Forecast Surf4cast.com

Walt was one of the early pioneers of on-line surf reports and forecast. As silly as that sounds, ten years is a long time on the internet where a week is a month and a year is a decade. Counting in Internet Dog Years, Walt can be considered the ‘GodFather’ of on-line surf reports. His first surfing webpage was in the mid-90s during the infancy of the World Wide Web!

Nowadays, everyone seems to have a website, blog, or web presence. The internet has become a vital communication tool for everyone! Even the haters seem to have accepted on-line surf reports. Maybe they still don't like it, but, I don't get hate mail anymore like I use to when I first started to work with 2ndlight.com

I can remember checking Walt’s surf report in 1996 while I worked at the Space Center. His daily reports started with SurfInfo.com and eventually branched off to his own site. Walt has provided the on-line community with daily surf report for ten years now! It will be interesting to read his thoughts of surf forecasting and the Internet.

WaterView can be found with the We Are Water navigation tool on top and bottom of each page of the site. The interview with Walt should be up the next week or two.

John Hearin gave his Artificial Surfing Reef presentation to the City of Cocoa Beach last Thursday night. An e-mail from John said the meeting went pretty good, but only missing equation is the funding of the project!
