Pro Surf Ramblings
The WCT Pros are in a holding pattern until April 11th. The 2nd
contest of the season will be at Bells Beach, Australia.
Also, there was a Men and Women WQS contest at Huntington Beach
this past week. It was broadcast live on the internet, but I missed
the coverage. Surfline has excellent article/photos of the event:

News
from Hawaii:
Thursday, March
23, 2006
A female surfer
was attacked by a shark at about 11:30 a.m. at Leftovers Beach
on the North Shore, according to city lifeguards.
The shark apparently
bit the surfer's leg, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for city
lifeguards, noting that the surfer was taken to Kahuku Hospital.
Cheplic said he didn't know the extent of the injury or which
leg was bitten.
The beach, about
one mile south of Waimea Bay, does not have a lifeguard, Cheplic
said. Lifeguards have posted shark-sighting warning signs
between Laniakea and Waimea, Cheplic said. People are being
advised to stay out of the area's water, which is still murky
from recent rain runoff.

Pier Talk
I hit the water for the first time in a couple weeks
on Monday.
The surf conditions weren't great, but it was the
first swell we have seen in awhile.
So, I was desperate to get wet.
Nothing beats that first plunge into the great
blue ocean after an absence from it.
It just seems like everything is washed away, or
cleansed.
That first duck dive under a wave just
wiped away all previous thoughts.
I finally was surfing again, and nothing else
mattered, other than getting to the outside.
The paddle out was non-eventful and I positioned
myself inside to catch a quickee, and get one under my
belt.
As I waited for the first set, a shark swished
by and then dove deep.
That was a jolt!
I then saw a blue crab swimming on top of the
water and toward me. The crab was in a desperate attempt to find
cover, ...and fast!
Swoosh…one more fly-by
from the shark followed by a third.
The shark then swallowed the crab just a few feet
behind me!
Bye Bye crab.
Nothing gets the adrenaline pumping faster than
seeing a shark up close.
In retrospect, seeing the shark and then catching
the first wave, reconfirmed that surfing is one Hell-of-a-Sport.
Who else experiences this thrill other than surfers?
To skim along the water's edge and experience dangerous wildlife
up close?
When I talk to people about surfing they typically
ask, “Aren’t you afraid of sharks?”
My immediate response is, “Yes, of course!”
I’m a Child-of- the-80s and had
to live through watching the movie Jaws when it first came
out on the big screen. It is naturally engrained in my brain to
be scared of sharks.
Who isn’t?
Surfing is a great stress reliever and as the
surf got better into Tuesday and Wednesday it made the previous
flat spell a distant memory. That first duck-dive on Monday
started off a fun Surfing Spring Break
of 2006.
I’m glad I got to experience it, minus a
shark bite!
Fresh Friday out…Gone Surfing.
