Pro Surf Ramblings

The Men's Fiji contest is currently in a holding pattern waiting for a new swell to show up. They are in Round 4 and the surf was outstanding for the first three rounds. Again, ASP provided live webcast along with the contest's sponsor Globe.

Kelly Slater is out this contest with a rib injury. This gives a chance for everyone else in the pack to catch up in the overall point standings.

When the contest starts back up, it looks like a heated chase with some very able surfers in the hunt. Surfline is forecasting larger waves for Monday and/or Tuesday. But, keep in tune as the swell may pick up over the weekend.

Top Ten Ratings after event #3 on the Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour:

The first day of the Globe WCT Fiji 2006 provided excellent conditions for both the surfers and spectators. Some surfers chose to view the action from the channel while the judges from the tower.

(Editor Joke: While others selected to view it on-line!)

Taj Burrow (Yallingup, WA, Aus) (pictured) struggled to find any high scoring rides and lost out to American Peter Mendia and fellow Australian Luke Stedman in round one of the Globe WCT Fiji.

Adriano de Souza (Brz) was on fire in his opening round heat, posting one of the highest heat scores of the day, 17.17 out of 20 points. Despite his high heat score, the rookie was still beaten by CJ Hobgood (USA) who posted a heat score of 18.73 points to take the win.

Paulo Moura (Brazil) found the waves he needed in round one of the Globe WCT Fiji scoring enough to win his heat and send former three times world champ Andy Irons (Haw) to losers round two.

With wide open tubes asking to be ridden Mark ’Occy" Occhilupo (AUS) uses the advantage of being a "goofy" footer at the left hand break of Tavarua.

Andy Irons (Haw) picked up one of the more sizeable waves during his round two heat eliminating local Fijian wildcard Ratu Aca. Aca (Fij) was the local Fijian wildcard and son of the Chief of Tavarua Island.

Nathan Hedge (Aus) excelled in round three of the Globe WCT Fiji getting a perfect Cloudbreak coverup scoring a near perfect 10 with his highest scoring ride of 9.63. By advancing through to round four Hedge eliminated Fredrick Patacchia Jnr (Haw).

With day four being offered perfect conditions once again, Troy Brooks (Aus) found a perfect coverup and won his heat by 0.94 of a point eliminating fellow Australian Joel Parkinson. Brooks advances to round four of the Globe WCT Fiji 2006.

Joel Parkinson’s (Aus) emotions showed through in his round four heat against Troy Brooks (Aus). With perfect conditions and both surfers giving top level performances Parkinson let it all out when he lost by 0.94 of a point and was eliminated from the Globe WCT Fiji 2006.

Andy Irons (Haw) put his skills and the perfect conditions to good use in his round four heat against Peter Mendia. In the hopes of winning the Glove WCT Fiji and improving his position on the tour rankings Irons advanced to round four eliminating Mendia from the event.

Timmy Reyes (USA) wowed the crowds with his high level performance in the perfect conditions at Cloudbreak during his round three heat against Bruce Irons (Haw). Reyes ended the heat leaving Irons with a requirement of 9.96 points. Irons could not find the near perfect ride required and was eliminated from the Globe WCT Fiji. Reyes advances to round four.

Damien Hobgood (Florida, USA) posted the highest heat score of the day, an 18.00 (out of 20 points) to win his round 3 heat. Hobgood eliminated Chris Ward (CA, USA) from the event and will face Darren O’Rafferty (Aus) in round 4.

Pier Talk

Summer is here in Florida. School is out and we should slide into the rainy season soon. We are in a state of suspension as we wait for any sign of surf as we have endured a three week flat spell. This is typically a flat period for us, so we are use to it…it’s just that when you are away from something you love so much, the pain grows each day you are away from it!

Surfing has a certain hypnotic trance it places over its participants. Similar to fishing, where you throw out some bait and wait…and wait…and wait…but, when you do finally catch that fish the excitement of at all erases the previous memory of anxiety.

Next week and Hurricane season starts. June First is the official start date for the Atlantic basin Hurricane season. Although it doesn’t guarantee we get surf, it does indicate that our dreaded extended flat spell may end soon!

If you look at things in the broader spectrum, Florida’s flat season is a great time to take up other hobbies, or spend time with the family, or be productive on other accents of life.

Try not to dwell on no swell.

With anything you love to do, the absence makes the heart grow fonder!

Logjammer’s Total Involvement article got favorable reviews and a few e-mails sent my way. Thanks for all the feedback!

Total Involvement by logjammer

I was suppose to put out a couple of other articles this past week. The Walt Barnes interview is complete and just waiting for some Edit Time. I plan on making We Are Water’s Waterview link a place to conduct interviews with various people involved in the so-called surf tribe.

Also, BK William has one on the queue along with another guest writer that sent in an article a couple of weeks ago. These will get pushed out soon and sorry for the delay.

I’m running a one man circus over here! I have all these ideas in my head and developing the site has been fun. I’m working on an E-commerce site as well. So, We Are Water looks to keep dripping along!

Thanks for checking out Fresh Friday!

Fresh Friday out…
