Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo, or the 5th of May, is not Mexico’s Independence Day. Here is a brief history of Cinco de Mayo:

Pro Surf Ramblings

Both the Men and Women WCT third contest are at Teahupoo (pronounced Cho-poo), Tahiti this week. The Men's trials took place this past week with the waiting period for both main events to take place when a bigger swell shows.

"Forecasts suggest that swell could rise to around the six feet plus mark by Sunday and if so we’ll see the incredible natural phenomenon that is Teahupoo fire off its renowned ferocious barrels." -asp

Check the webcast each day around Noon or One O'clock, Eastern Standard Time for any updates if the contest is on or not. Live webcast can be found at this link: Teahupoo Billabong Pro Contest Main Site

Kalani Chapman was the days standout and doesn’t he know it on this gem late in the afternoon. A perfect 10 point ride from the brash Hawaiian. Kalani Chapman lost out to fellow Hawaiian Danny Fuller in the quarterfinals of the VZ Trials.

Hira Teriinatoofa posted a near perfect 19.07 (out of 20) to advance to the semi finals of the VZ Trials then went on to defeat Steven Pierson to advance to the finals.

Tahitian surfers rule on their reefs! Heiarii Williams spent more time in the barrel than anyone today and went on to win the Air Tahiti Nui/Von Zipper Trials which includes a wild card into the Billabong Pro.

The trials winners from left to right: Danny Fuller (3rd), Hira Teriinatoofa (2nd), Heiarii Williams (1st), Steven Pierson (3rd) and Pascal Luciani (President of the Tahitian Surfing Federation) and Bushy Mitchell (Billabong Pro Event Manager)

Hawaiian Danny Fuller was in great form riding probably the deepest barrels of the day. Third overall, he’ll be hoping to get into the Billabong Pro with a few injuries possible in the main event.

Hira Terinatoofa took wild card spot number two in a all Tahitian final. Three Tahitian surfers are in the Billabong Pro which includes Manoa Drollet and they’ll be super hard to beat on their favourite reef!

A traditional Tahitian ceremony kicked off the start of the Billabong Pro in Tahiti.

Pier Talk

Once again I type this Viernes Fresco article while sore from surfing the previous days! We had Epic conditions on Wednesday with a nice sized swell with glassy conditions. I think most Florida surfers sat out the strong and gusty onshore winds and waited for the clean-up that found Wednesday to be the Day-of-the-Year!

Pretty much every one and their brother was out surfing the flawless surf up and down the coast. We had a healthy wind fetch pointed towards Florida for 4 straight days and Wednesday finally saw the wind die and blow offshore. From Jacksonville down to Palm Beach County saw excellent surf!

This is back-to-back swells we had the past two weeks.

...and they say Florida never gets good surf!

Below are a few photos from Satellite Beach. Photos are by Bill Burbage. Quality isn't all that good, but they were taken in haste by a cheapo digi-cam. It's very hard to sit up on the beach and take photos when the surf is this good! Thanks to anyone who does it.

Everyone and their brother...
