Surf Ramblings
The Men’s Triple Crown series
of contest is currently taking place in Hawaii.
The first two-out-of -three contest have been ran. The third and
most important the Pipeline contest opening window
starts today, Friday the 8th. The Pipe contest
is the last of the 2006 Men’s World Championship Tour
with Kelly Slater all ready securing the title
back in Spain. Slater
Wins in Spain
Andy Irons is currently the leader in winning
the Triple Crown. The Triple Crown is awarded to
the surfer with the highest winning points of the three contest.
Andy won the first contest at Haleiwa, Oahu. Joel Parkinson
won the 2nd contest at Sunset.

The Pipe contest is the only one that counts on the WCT tour for
points and since Kelly Slater has all ready won
the title this contest looks to be anti-climatic. However,
there is still enough drama to keep it interesting. Pipeline, is
awe-inspiring in itself, but putting some of the World’s best
surfers in the mix and there is usually some spectacular surfing
to witness. The coverage of Pipe can be found here through ASP’s
main page: http://www.aspworldtour.com/triplecrown/
On the Women’s side of the WCT, the title is still up for
grabs.

Pier Talk
| Here is a topic that many surfers
have probably pondered at sometime with their experience with
the internet. The term surfing has meant a whole
new meaning to the general public since the advent of the
World Wide Web.
Surfing is
a household term now with the main definition of using the
internet.
You can tell any non-surfer nowadays
that you were surfing recently and
they would initially think you were talking about the internet.
I’m curious on who or what group
of people actually starting using the term surfing
for traversing the Information Super Highway.
The verb does fit. The internet is like a changing wave face
with different websites and clicking on hyperlinks and then
experiencing a new term or looking over the more popular sites
like youtube, myspace, or
google.
As a sidenote: I’m typing this
editorial in MSWord and the words youtube,
myspace, and google are
not recognized by the automatic spell checker. I can actually
remember back when MSWord didn’t recognize
the word Internet as well. Indeed word meanings
change throughout history and the term surfing isn’t
owned exclusively by surfers anymore!
What can we do?
In some ways surfing
has been stolen by the technology world. At least surfing
stays close to it's true meaning...having fun!

We Are Water Happenings
I just finished the third week of being back in the cubicle
rat race. I took a job back at the Space Center
where I got laid off back in 2002. Its great to be back! But, I
do miss all the free time of the unemployed days.
For instance, one thing I really do miss from my "Mr.
Mom" days is the ability to surf during the weekday. I’ve
been regulated back to being a Weekend Warrior.
Fortunately the surf was pretty good last weekend and it reconfirmed
to me that Surfing is Fun. I missed the really good days
before Thanksgiving and some other days during the weekday. But,
last weekend the surf glassed off for a fun couple of sessions.
It felt good to be surfing. You really don’t realize how bad
you love something until you are away from it!
For me, last weekend with the fun surf sent an alarm off in my
head…I NEED TO SURF… I know I’m
preaching to the choir but Surfing is really fun.
There have been no new articles published the past three weeks
but logjammer has promised me a new one along with
BK Williams. I also have Bill Burbage’s fantastic
2nd Indo Boat trip photos to process. We
Are Water has been put on the backburner with the new job,
but I still plan on developing the site.
Fresh Friday articles probably won’t
be updated every week, but I’ll try to get them out bi-weekly
now. Also, if you want to submit any writings or stories then let
me know. I’m always looking for fresh content and it helps
me get inspired to write more articles myself. Now that I’m
a Weekend Warrior I’ll need that inspiration
to continue We Are Water!
