| By David Reid Welcome to Fresh Friday! First a quick bio of me. I’m not too much into ‘pimping’ myself and I read other website's About Us links and I giggle knowing it was written in third person. I find it hard to write in third person, unless it is fiction. In some regards, I guess it keeps it formal and professional looking. But, those two adjectives do not follow my style. I’m a stereotypical surfer in that regard! With that said, President and CEO of We Are Water…, David Reid, has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the surf fashion industry. Paparazzi Magazines report that a photo of David Reid in his We Are Water... surf fashion earns top dollar. Did I happen to say I’m very sarcastic? Another surfer trait… In a nutshell, I'm just a surfer who has started a surf related company with a presence on the internet! Not too unique if you think about it, so don't... We Are Water... I’ll be using this weekly Fresh Friday article to report the happenings on what is going on with the website and throw out some random text on all matters that concern the surfing world. That is right, the world. The internet has now become the established medium for surfing information. Who reads the mags anymore? The surf magazines can still offer great literature and photographs. However, many of their news features are out dated and past tense. With the internet…news travels fast, and many times quicker than the surf media can report on. The coconut telegraph has transformed itself onto the Internet! For instance, just last week, the world (via internet chat rooms) has learned something we Floridians have known for a long time. You can tow-in into big surf! The infamous 1991 Halloween swell is a benchmark to compare big Florida surf events. During this 15-20 feet Halloween swell, surfers used Jet Ski assistance to catch massive waves in Satellite Beach. This is probably the first time Jet Skis were used to catch large waves and documented. Nowadays, Jet Ski assisted surfing is mostly associated with other spots in the world. For example, Mavericks in California and Jaws on Maui are two of the most famous. On Friday, April 15, 2005, a very strong low pressure system developed off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. 25 foot seas were pointed into Florida. Most spots were too big and blown out, but a certain South Florida spot turned into the epicenter of the surfing world! The world was witness to the East Coast version of big wave surfing. The waves may not of been as big as Mavericks or Jaws, however, this event ‘shocked and awed’ the on-line community. Florida again, as with the Infamous '91 Halloween swell, awoke the surf community and claimed Florida does indeed get big surf!
The spot, to remain nameless (I don’t want to upset the Surf Gods), was a showcase of big wave riding, just as thrilling as other big wave spots. Florida season pros and current WCT pro CJ Hobgood, with other brave warriors, surfed amazing big waves using Jet Ski assisted take-offs. Scan various internet sites as there are many that show digital photography and videography of this historic Florida event. The surf mags and other non-internet media are sure to follow up on this!
We Are Water... website development news Opening release date of WeAreH2O.Com was Friday April 22, 2005. WeAreH2O.Com looks to become a Surfing Themed Information Entertainment Portal. Our emphasis is art, particularly surfing related art. Art is in many forms and is a broad subject. Thus, we will have an endless supply of content for We Are Water... We Are Water... would like to thank the artist that have written articles. Logjammer is writing a bi-weekly article titled, “Drifting”. Logjammer, as he is known in the on-line community, looks to give insight and philosophies of the inner workings of surfing. Surfing is easy to describe in its physical sense. However, the enigma of this thing called ‘Surfing’ is at its core, more than just sliding down a wave. Drifting will keep us moving along…as we sometimes fight the drift, paddle against the grain, and in other instances, just ‘go with the flow’… At times, drifting seems like the most logical thing to do… Also, Dermot returns to the on-line community in a weekly article titled, “Swell Memories”. Dermot has submitted his older writings and promises new articles that focus on ‘Swell Memories’. We Are Water... is excited to offer Dermot’s writings! We Are Water... is looking for more writers in this ilk. Literature is a major focus for the website. Surf literature is often forgotten as a major contributor in the sport. We Are Water... would like to perpetuate surfing literature and highlight it as an essential art form. The hit counter of We Are Water... has been moving along in a parabolic curve. Just a scattering hits before its release and now up to 45 readers a day. I will briefly touch on the hit counter in future Fresh Friday articles. Once the website is better developed and as we build more content, this looks to increase!
WeAreH2O.Com will be refining the overall look of the site, along with developing the other ‘under construction’ links. An E-commerce site is in the works and will feature surf related products. Also, still brainstorming the surf links. Initially, WeAreH2O.Com goals were to provide worldwide surf reports/forecast, and cams. We Are Water... may still do it. But, that portion of WeAreH2O.Com is on the backburner. (Rome wasn’t built in a day.)
Updated every Friday, Fresh Friday is just random and train-of-thought writings from the internationally known surf fashion king, David Reid! Back to "We Are Water..." Home
