One of We Are Water’s goal is to make waves through the on-line surfing community. It’s mission statement is to be a surfing information entertainment portal. One facet of We Are Water is Surf Literature. For many years, the written word has played a vital role in representing surfer’s attitudes and perceptions. Dermot has captured that essence in his Swell Memories article "Job Application". It registered 579 page views since it was published on Sunday night! It’s a good one:

Job Application by Dermot Swell Memories

Everyone has heard by now, but just last Tuesday, Kelly Slater wins Teahupoo contest in incredible fashion. It was broadcast live on the internet through ASPWorldTour.Com and the action was amazing. Teahupoo is a world class break that is rivaling the infamous ‘Pipeline’ as one of the premier tube riding wave. The surf breaks over such a treacherous reef and breaks with so much power that the rides surfers get are out-of-this-world, or almost cartoonish. They look like the kind of waves drawn back in Jr. High School. You know the sketches of unbelievable huge surf with people doing impossible stunts? Its that kind of wave.

CJ Hobgood on a Monster:

The contest turned out to be a ‘Battle for Brevard’ contest. Satellite Beach versus Cocoa Beach in the finals with Damien Hobgood and Kelly Slater respectively. Slater scored two perfect ten rides, with Damien dislocating his shoulder in the final. Another perfect ten score by Slater was in a heat with Bruce Irons. Slater was down with a few minutes to go. Miraculously, he catches ‘the wave of the day’. Contest announcers were calling it the greatest wave ever caught. Slater dropped in late, looked to lose control, but somehow, lays back, stands back up, and gets an incredible deep tube! Slater then narrowly beat CJ Hobgood to get in the finals against the other Satellite Beach foe Damien. The Hobgoods have Teahupoo wired. For Kelly Slater to not only knock out the best surfers in the world, then score two perfect tens in the final…only adds to the living legend of Kelly Slater!

Sorry about the lack of a Fresh Friday article last week. Circumstances had me unavailable. Mainly I surfed everyday for the previous two weeks, went out and saw a late night concert, and was not ‘feeling’ it. Coupled with a small stint of Writer’s block and pure unadulterated laziness, I made the decision to skip it. Fortunately, a very good friend has returned from Costa Rica and donated Tico Coffee. After drinking a couple cups…I’m back! Its amazing how drinking Tico Coffee makes me feel like I’m in the tropics and I feel so alive and creative. I think there is something extra in there other than caffeine…. Maybe its just brings me back to that time I was swinging in the hammock. A few surf sessions and days under my belt…sipping coffee…swaying with the coconut palms and sea breeze. Looking out to the sea…thinking…this is what life is all about…just swinging in a tree…all tired, surfed-out, just lazing about… (I digress)…

With that said, thanks for checking out We Are Water and the Fresh Friday article. I’ve got some er…*ahem*…work I gotta go do!

We Are Water is looking for writers and photographers. The opportunity to get published on We Are Water is just as easy as sending me an e-mail. We Are Water ‘Featured Artist’ column is coming up in June. Also, I am looking for an article for the Guest Writer link. Jot something down, surf history, philosophy, poetry…what ever you know or do…E-me at Sales@WeAreH2O.Com

Thanks
David Reid
