Slater Seven Time World Champ! Damien Hobgood silences Brazil, Brian Bobb rescue story.

First off read this article Champion of the World by Wayne "Rabbit" Bartholomew-ASP President Champion of the World Kelly Slater

Pro Surf Ramblings

Kelly Slater took the World Championship on Tuesday in Brazil! The event was broadcast live on the internet and it was fun to watch the drama unfold. The race was between Kelly Slater and Andy Irons going into Brazil. The Slater/Irons rivalry has developed into one of the sport’s greatest. Andy Irons was the current World Champion with 3 titles in a row and Kelly Slater was looking to break up Andy Iron’s 4th. The method of Slater winning was anti-climatic with not how they won, but how they lost.

Kelly Slater got put out by Travis Logie earlier in the day and was left wondering if it would go to Pipeline to be decided. However, with a stroke of luck and help from Nathan Hedge, Andy Irons lost in the Quarter Final to close the chapter on the World Title Chase.

Florida Today Newspaper coverage of Kelly Slater's WCT title

Not to be overshadowed, but the drama wasn’t over after Slater’s impromptu celebration. Fellow Brevardian, Damien Hobgood, finished out the day by beating Brazilian Hero Victor Ribas in the Finals. The Brazilians packed the beach to watch their countryman lose in the final seconds of the heat by Damien Hobgood. The crowd immediately streamed off the beach after the horn and was not pleased with the outcome!

But, from my vantage point, I was cheering!

Good day to be from Brevard County…First, Cocoa Beach’s Kelly Slater wins the World Championship and then Satellite Beach’s Damien Hobgood takes the Contest win!

Now the surfers can relax going into the final WCT contest of the year at Pipeline. Everyone can once again be friends and put off the heated competition and go out and surf in what hopefully will be another classic Pipeline contest. Holding period of the Pipe contest starts Dec. 8th. I’m sure there will be a lot of what-ifs and speculation talk on the question of if the title race went to Oahu. Basically, who would of won, if the title race went to Pipeline? I think everyone would like to see Kelly Slater and Andy Irons have a surf-off in the Final Heat in huge Pipeline Surf! Man, 61, saves surfer caught in rip current

The above title caught my eye on October 28 issue of the Satellite Beach Orbiter published by Florida Today newspaper. I wish I could find an on-line article of this story, but it looks as if it was only in the print edition. The story starts off as a typical life saving from drowning story, but as I read on the story it got deeper. Like I said I wish I could put a link to an on-line copy of the story as I’m just paraphrasing here.

Brian Bobb who is 61 and lives in Satellite Beach saved 29 year old Jeremiah Chapman from drowning in the churned up surf from Tropical Storm Tammy. Chapman was out surfing and got in trouble. His leash snapped and was in a dangerous rip current with his friend John Grant. John made it to shore but Jeremiah didn’t and was drowning.

Florida Today: “So, the 61-year-old former surfer peeled off his shoes, grabbed a boogie board and paddled out into the water.”

With the help from Brian Bobb, both washed up to the beach with paramedics all ready arrived to administer first aid. Jeremiah was rushed to the hospital to further save his life. However, the sad twist of this story, is that Brian Bobb, who has a pacemaker and is in ill-health himself suffered his third heart attack. Brian survived the heart attack and is quoted in the article, “I have four children and two grandchildren and a wife of 30 years that I thought about before I went in. But, I could not live knowing I had a chance to save him (and didn’t).”

A few weeks later Jeremiah and friends returned to personally thank Brian Bobb for saving his life. They awarded him with a Martin Dreadnought Guitar which was much appreciated by Bobb who is a musician.

A touching story indeed!

We Are Water Happenings

I finally got a new logjammer article out in cyber-space. I have suffered a mild head cold all week and have felt lethargic and uninspired to do anything. I guess it is Flu Season! However, the article is pretty good and is titled, Wild As The Sea.

B.K.William had 572 people checking out his article Wrong or Right over the past week! That one spike on the hit counter stood out amongst the other articles. Thanks for linking it to internet forums. It is a quirky article and I kind of wonder what people think about. Not your ordinary surf literature! When B.K.William said he wanted his articles titled Weird Water, I was kind of intrigued in what he had in mind. Now we know!

Weirdness is sometimes good! Why be normal? Wrong or Right?
