Pro-Surf Ramblings

Kelly Slater failed to secure a 7th World Title last weekend when Damien Hobgood got the best of him in the Semi-finals of the French Pro. Andy Irons went on and dismissed Hobgood to take the French Title. Andy Irons is nipping on Slater’s heals to reclaim the World Title. There are only two more contests that count in the race, Brazil and Pipeline. The Brazil contest begins October 31st, while the Pipeline contest starts December 8th. Don’t quote me on this but Andy Irons must win Brazil for the World Tour Title to be decided on Oahu. I haven’t done the math, but the announcers on the French webcast mentioned that if Kelly Slater finishes higher than Andy Irons he will win Número Sete (Portuguese translation of Number Seven). But, I think Andy Irons must win Brazil to stay in the running…err…surfing!

Pier Talk

I was in 7-Eleven today and a young surfer was buying wax. The cashier made a joke that there are no wax sales until 1pm. I had to stop myself and think about that for a little bit. Are 7-Eleven clerks allowed to make jokes? It was kind of funny at the moment! I replied, “They ought to make a law that you can’t sell wax to longboarders.”

The Cashier looked perplexed, I don’t think she surfs or got my joke…

Número Sete

Below is a photo of the Portugal Coastline taken by my Father-n-law last week. He says the whole coast is like this. It just bugs my eye out thinking of all the possibilities of surfing the other side of the Atlantic! Although it is hard to see without blowing the photo up, the small speck in the middle of the beach is a surfer strapping on a wetsuit.. It doesn’t look like they are worried about crowds at this one spot! Better practice up on that Portuguese (Número Sete)! As a side note, it is interesting that Brazil speaks Portuguese while the surrounding countries in South and Central America speak Spanish. I wonder what history is behind that?

Surf has been very consistent in East Central Florida. October has had waves every day with super strong onshore winds. Wednesday saw a surprise in that a tropical storm formed right off Brevard County, Florida. Tropical Storm Tammy was named while the eye was just off the coast. Tammy was not forecasted to form in this location and it was neat to see the eye as it moved North. At one point you could see the Western edge of the eye as it moved over head. Also, the winds mysteriously turned offshore for a few quick hours in the morning and offered a clean-up with some size! Thanks Tammy!

We Are Water Happenings

Logjammer sent me an e-mail that he just got back from Woodstock (I'm not making this up.) We Are Water hasn’t seen any input from logjammer for awhile and I guess now we know why! Woodstock!?! Wasn’t that back in the ‘60s? Logjammer's last article is titled, Surfing In The Past. I'm wondering if logjammer has discovered time travel or something!

Logjammer, if you are reading this…Come back to the present...you are overdue for an article!

Swell Memories has a new article up this past week. Dermot’s 30 Year Reunion article starts out real soulful and retrospective, but then slides into slapstick comedy. A good and funny read by Dermot: Swell Memories 30 Year Reunion

Also, A new writer for We Are Water, B.K.William seems to be drinking Weird Water in an article about Toads! This is B.K.William’s first article and there are more to come. Article link here:Take Off And Die Situation

Overall site development has been focused on pushing out surfing articles. The hit counter is averaging over 200 people looking at the site per day! Bill Burbage’s Indo Boat Trip (Indo Boat Trip) has been the leading hit collector so far. Also, last week’s Fresh Friday recorded 983 people reading it in one day!

I plan on next week to clean up the site and work on updating the stagnate links. I’ve really wanted to get a good page on the Surf Links for awhile. Maybe this week I will compile a good list of links! The consistent surf we have had is hampering website development, but this is necessarily NOT a bad thing!

Thanks for checking out We Are Water!
See Ya’ll in the water!
