Fresh Friday
By Dave Reid

I attended a surf film premier this past week at DaKine Burritos in Satellite Beach. I was reminded on why I don’t like to watch surf movies!

They make me depressed and feeling inadequate about Florida surf. The constant streaming of perfect waves with perfect surfers on them just absolutely kills me. I really should let it go and just resign myself that Florida doesn’t get those type of waves. I also have to ask myself, could I even surf those big and perfect waves?

Wamiea or Pipeline? Who am I kidding? I don’t think so…But, its fun to think I can...

The movie was pretty good and I’m being vicetious. Watching a surf film during the start of a summertime flat spell does not help my disposition. Subjecting myself to watching other people surfing on great waves and having fun, really makes me itch...to go surfing. Yet, where I currently sit, I can't. So why do I put myself through the torture? At least I have yard work to keep me off the streets!

Seeing the recent crowd at the movie also reminded me that East Coast surfing has been growing for a number of years and is enjoying massive popularity. There was an overflowing crowd of all walks of the East Coast Surfing industry. From young to old, Pros to Gremmies, there were many good people there. Its fun to see a travelling surf movie give surfers a reason to get together.

I was searching E-bay recently while looking for old surf magazines and ran across an interesting one. July 1966 issue of Sport Illustrated featured Phil Edwards and a titled article "Surfing's East Coast Boom!"

I thought it was interesting to see a Californian surfer on an article about East Coast surfing. I wonder what the article says! The magazine was too expensive for me to buy.

Just this past week in the mail, my son’s new ‘Boys Life’, July 2005 magazine arived and on the front cover is Kelly Slater. The feature story is Kelly Slater teaching Orange County, California Boy Scouts how to surf. Ironically the roles are reversed here. Back in the '60's, Phil Edwards, a prominent Californian introducing surfing to the East Coast in July 1966. Then now, almost 40 years later, Kelly Slater, from Cocoa Beach, is returning the favor and teaching Californians to surf!

We Are Water Happenings:

Logjammer has a new Drifting article out. Surfing Down To Earth covers his perception on surfing mentalities and such:

Dermot and Swell Memories will be updated next week with Part Two of A Name

Swell Memories "A Name" by Dermot

With July 4th Weekend coming up, I have a ton of yard work to do beforehand…Got to get out there and cut that Summertime lawn…No surfing for me!

Summer is a great time to learn how to surf. Get out there and bring a friend!

Fresh Friday Out.
