| Fresh Friday is a 'semi-updated' article by We Are Water's editor Dave Reid. It contains ramblings and tid-bits about nothing in general! Surfing and We Are Water development is it's main theme. | |
| Fresh Friday June 24, 2005 This past week saw the first ‘official’ day of summer and the International Surf Day. The East Coast of Florida was treated by an anomalous Northeast ground swell! Typically Florida is flat during the summer, unless a tropical storm is nearby a NE swell is very rare. I don’t want to sound too cosmic or grandiose, but the coincidence of this swell to arrive on a proclaimed International Surf Day is too great not to be noted! Wherever you are in the world, even if not near the water, hopefully you felt the swell felt around the planet! (Sorry, went Cosmic for a tick!) When we get something we love unexpectedly, it reinforces that feeling of joy! Each and every time I’m in the water it keeps bringing me back to the core of why we surf! …it is fun! ...(Grandiose thrown in for good measure) I’ve noticed a lot of new and young people learning how to surf this past week! It’s encouraging to see a fresh generation taking up the art of surfing. I call it an art as it is more than just physical in nature. There is a certain appreciation that goes along with surfing that is more than being able to hit the lip, or do a roundhouse cutback. Yes, those maneuvers are impressive, but to get to that level there is also a commitment and learned recognition of what it takes…to get there. It seems to me, that the more one puts into surfing the more one gets back! Surfing is a lifetime pursuit that can put everything else in perspective. Sorry I'm getting deeper than I intended, but, I want to stress that if you are a beginner…stay with it. It only gets better! Due to a great family road trip to DC, West Virginia, and Tennessee, We Are Water stood stagnate. I was unable to make updates and develop the site while away. However, the web counter steadily increased. With each new article We Are Water’s readership is growing! I would like to encourage readers to spread the 'Gospel' of the site. Please share the links with friends, family, and forums. I'm working to improve the look of the front page with better graphics and also still developing the E-commerce portion of We Are Water. My initial goal with the website was to build content, then slowly refine the overall look and feel of it. I can now donate more time to it, so look for fresh updates soon! We Are Water welcomes Matt Michael and his imaginative writings. Matt currently lives in Costa Rica and has traveled extensively to search for that perfect wave. He recommends to ‘Pay the Price’ as it may be worth it: Paying The Price Dermot’s Swell Memories also has a new article. Titled ‘A Name’, Dermot investigates the naming of surf spots in part one. In part two, he describes a Swell Memory of naming one himself! A Name part one Swell Memories Logjammer has also submitted a new article in We Are Water’s segment Drifting. It is titled, “Surfing Down To Earth.” I’m currently editing it and it should be published shortly. Drifting index is here: "Surfing Down To Earth" Drifting Index We Are Water would like to encourage new writers and photographers to help in providing content for the website. Part of We Are Water’s informal mission statement is to provide artist a medium to display their works. Literature and photography both play an important role in developing young surfers (as well as seasoned pros) perspective on the world of surfing. I feel that helping this portion of surfing will greatly improve the whole enigma of surfing. We all like to hear stories and see photos of the hobby we love. Share it with others if you can! It truly is International. Fresh Friday Out |
