Surf Ramblings
Women's WCT has
been taking place this week in Itacaré, Brazil. Live webcast
coverage has been pretty good with Thursday ending Round 3. Contest
may end on Friday. The swell has been marginal but contestable.
Below from ASPWorldTour.Com:
Former ASP World
Champ Sofia Mulanovich (PER) capped off an amazing day of surfing
with the day's highest scoring heat as she went head-to-head with
Jacqueline Silva (BRA).
Mulanovich took no prisoners opening with an 8.75 and then backing
it up with an 8.00 for the day's high heat score of 16.75.
Silva would not fade out quietly, acquiring a 7.75 and 7.00 - a
score that would have won most other heats. However the locally-backed
Brazilian could not find the 9.00 she needed.
Competitors and event organizers will assess the conditions at
Friday noon (local time) tomorrow and potentially finish the event
if conditions permit.
Quarterfinal match-ups are as follows:
QF1 - Julia Christian (USA) vs. Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS)
QF2 - Claire Bevilacqua (AUS) vs. Chelsea Georgeson (AUS)
QF3 - Layne Beachley (AUS) vs. Heather Clark (ZAF)
QF4 - Silvana Lima (BRA) vs. Sofia Mulanovich (PER)

Welcome to Paradise! The Billabong Pro
contest tower is nestled between coconut palms on Itacare’s
Tiririca Beach.

Layne Beachley and Chelsea Georgeson
currently lie second and third on the ASP World Tour ratings
and are eager to engage in the World Title race with World
Number one Melanie Redman-Carr.

Claire Bevilacqua keeps the tunes pumping
in Brasil.

Multiple ASP Women’s World Champion
Layne Beachley is looking super polished in the water and
all are expecting a big result from the 17th year pro at
the Billabong Pro Itacare.

Claire Bevilaqua’s super vertical
surfing earned her a ticket into round three behind Layne
Beachley.

Hawaiian Megan Abubo narrowly advanced
into round three ahead of Keala Kennelly.

After three straight wins on the ASP
Women’s World Tour Melanie Redman-Carr suffered an
early elimination at the Billabong Girls Pro leaving the
door open for her rivals to play catch-up.

Julia Christian advanced to round three
where she will face Megan Abubo.

Claire Bevilaqua finished tie with Samantha
Cornish but advanced with the single highest scoring ride
of six points.

Serena Brooke put up a good fight against
Layne Beachley in round three but was forced to settle for
equal ninth place when she was defeated by the six times
ASP World Champ.

Pier Talk
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I went to The Goods
grand opening this past weekend.
The shop is real nice and very professional
looking. You can tell that the Goods put a lot of thought
and effort into building the new shop. I got to talk to CJ
a little bit and he seemed very happy with opening a surf
shop. It’s a little bit of every surfer’s fantasy
to own their own surf shop. The Hobgoods have achieved this
with their hard work and putting themselves out there to the
public.
I also got to talk briefly to Corey
Lopez. He also just opened up his own shop over on the Gulf
side.
Both CJ and Corey talked about the
next contest at Trestles and how they both need to place high
in the contest to increase their chances at a World Championship.
The grand opening had two surf movies
out back. About 200 people assembled to watch the first movie
that was interrupted by a quick moving thunderstorm. Talk
about raining on a parade!
The two movies were Dayne Reynolds
and Globe’s new movie The Secret Machine.
The Dane Reynolds movie was pretty
good. He definitely surfs good. I always like the soundtrack
to surf films. I never recognize the bands but the music always
reminds me of the 80's alternative college radio stuff. The
movie was one dimensional however and no subplot, just him
surfing different spots and then showing him in the editing
room.
The Secret Machine was mo'
bettah. That film is excellent. Music is great and the surfing
is varied at different spots and different surfers. The plot
is that Dr. Surfwell (played by PT) developed a machine that
made the Hobgoods (and others) live in a dreamworld when they
are surfing. Well...I guess the dreamworld is all the locations
around the world where they surf. Great surf film. Very creative
concept with some neat trippy moments describing the machine.
Soundtrack was pretty good. I like the music they pick out
for these films!
We Are Water Happenings
Looking at the Ole’ Hit Counter the past couple of weeks
and We Are Water is averaging
250 people checking the site out on a daily basis. An interesting
thing was my Step Up movie review (Step
Up Film Review)has been one of the main hit collectors the past
three weeks with around 4,000 people checking it out.
I couldn’t track where the hits were coming from other than
google.com, Ask.com, and other search engines. I really couldn’t
figure out why everyone was checking out that film review from last
year?!?
The answer came to me when my wife said that she and the kid were
going to the movie and it is called Step Up.
Now I knew. People out in Internet Land have been searching
on this new Hollywood movie named Step Up and the search
engines have been pointing at We
Are Water!
So, if you are here from a dance movie search engine…Welcome…We
Are Water likes to dance as well! Just we like ballet done
on top of water...
I got good response from last week’s Fresh
Friday. Some of the feedback was favorable towards the Walt
Barnes article and Matt’s lil’ Mexico flashback. This
is the intention of We Are Water,
to get out these type of stories. If you have a story you
would like to share let me know. I’m always looking for fresh
content!
The Walt Barnes Interview went over 1,000 people checking it out
on the hit counter! Interview here: (Walt
Barnes Interview)
We have not seen any surf this past week for East Central Florida.
The summer doldrums has seemed to drag on for awhile now and I think
everyone is ready for the hurricanes to start up and pump in some
swell around here! Hello, King Neptune…are you listening?
Can I order up one overhead swell around here…and soon?
For the Labor Day National Kidney Foundation Surf contest I’m
volunteering to judge the amateur surfers. This will be the third
year I’ve been doing it and it’s a fun event and for
a worthy cause. I’ll see you up on the scaffolding again.
Look me up and say, “Hi!”
I’m looking to put out another Dermot article on the Swell
Memories link next week. (Swell
Memories Main Index)
Also, check out this event for Friday afternoon at the Brevard
Museum of Art. Talkin' Story...
