Surf Ramblings
Since the last Fresh Friday article, (June
9th, 2006), the ASP WCT went off in Mexico and now they
are currently at J-Bay, South Africa. As this article went to print,
Round 3 is currently being presented through a webcast. Kelly Slater
looks to be favored to win this contest and won in his Friday's
round 3 heat. Saturday is the last day for the J-bay contest and
the contest has been moved to boneyards as the predicted swell hasn't
fully arrived and conditions are unfavorable at the supertubes section
of J-bay.
Andy Irons, who claimed second place in the ratings
with a win in Mexico, lost in Round 2 J-bay and surely will drop
in the ratings for the World Title race.

A musician can explode rhythm into a mind bending sound with a
finely tuned guitar. That same instrument placed in the hands of
another performer would create an entirely new sound to the same
song. One man's Rock-n-Roll, is the next person's alternative beat.
You can change the arrangement, play it in a different chord, but
the song remains the same.
It’s from this analogy, I find most art forms and sports
get put in comparable groups. Music after all, is the art of arranging
sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative
composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre. I stole
that bit from a dictionary, but I needed something so precise, to
set the tone of where this is headed.
It was a Saturday just a few short weeks ago and I was on the way
for a quick session. Though the waves in Florida the last couple
of months haven’t been extraordinary, there have been quite
a few small days to produce a little continuous, unified, and evocative
composition. From the moment you walk up to the shore, small and
subtle differences separate every surfer. Beyond the fact that we
all enjoy the ocean; by the time your feet have hit the sand, you’ve
been categorized and stereotyped.
Now all you have to do is find out what your classification is.
There could be a hundred subcategories, but I digress, let’s
just imagine for the sake of an unending argument, that there are
four kinds of wave riders. Which one are you? I offer you this small
test; a challenged issued for you to see the layers of surfing and
those who would surf.
Part two of this will be posted next week with a Surfer Survey!

We Are Water Happenings

I took a three week road trip with my son through Tennessee, West
Virginia, and Virgina. It was cool to get away and see new things.
We did a lot of camping, hiking, and visiting friends/family. The
Great American Summer Road Trip!

DC on the Fourth of July
Weekend was fun!

White Water rafting in
Tennessee!

Skyline Drive, Virginia.
Appalachian Trail (AT) marker. One of these
years I plan on a Thru-hike the entire 2,000 mile AT! |
Thus, not much happened with We
Are Water. However, I’m back in the saddle
and give me a few weeks to get the juices flowing again and pushing
out new stuff. The grass was three feet tall and the pool an eerie
pond-green color when I returned. However, now that I’ve machete’d
and chlorinated my way out of my back yard jungle I can contribute
more time in developing the site.
Thanks for checking out Fresh Friday
and make sure you tune in to see if Kelly Slater on Saturday take
the J-bay trophy home and hold onto his first place position in
the World Title race.
Fresh Friday out…

News Release:
O’NEILL TAKES TITLE SPONSORSHIP OF 2007 SEBASTIAN INLET
PRO

Tim Garrett, O’Neill -- 949-428-2993
Mitch Varnes, Board Sports Management -- 321-777-9935
Board Sports Management, Inc. of Indialantic, Fla. and O’Neill
Clothing of Irvine, Ca. are pleased to announce that O’Neill
is now the title sponsor of the 2007 Association of Surfing
Professionals World Qualifying Series 4-star O’Neill
Sebastian Inlet Pro Presented by Ron Jon surfing tournament,
scheduled to run from January 5-11, 2007. The companies have
entered into a multi-year deal that will see the event carry
the O’Neill name through 2009.
The O’Neill Sebastian Inlet Pro Presented by Ron Jon,
www.oneillsipro.com , is the largest and most prestigious
surfing event on the U.S. East Coast and one of the most significant
qualifying events in North America. The contest was founded
in 2005 and has quickly become a favorite of not only those
surfers looking for valuable points leading to qualification
on the ASP’s elite World Championship Tour but also
of those surfers who have already reached the big leagues.
Past competitors include seven-time world champion Kelly Slater,
three-time world champion Tom Curren, 2001 world champion
C.J. Hobgood, along with 2005 SI Pro winner Cory Lopez and
2006 event champion Damien Hobgood.
The contest is the first event of each WQS competitive season
and is directly tied in with Surf Expo, a leading industry
trade show that attracts more than 18,000 attendees to Orlando.
“We are really excited about this arrangement and with
kicking off the first ASP event of the 2007 season,”
said O’Neill Clothing President and Chief Executive
Officer Kelly Gibson. “Sebastian Inlet has always been
an excellent venue, and we are super stoked to be a part of
it.”
“This is a win-win for everyone involved,” remarked
Board Sports Management President Mitch Varnes. “O’Neill
is clearly the dominant supporter of ASP qualifying events
in North America, with no other company even being close.
To have them involved at this level is a big step forward
for the event, competitive surfing in the U.S., aspiring pro
surfers and specifically to the East Central Florida community.
“It’s insane to see O’Neill come in with
such a strong commitment to Florida,” said 2005 event
winner Cory Lopez of Indian Rocks, Fla. As the premier team
rider for O’Neill, Lopez is especially excited about
the announcement. “This contest really put the East
Coast back on the pro surfing map, and it’s pretty gratifying
for me to see my main sponsor realizes that and that they’re
doing what it takes to keep it going and growing. I can’t
wait to surf in it next year.”
“O’Neill has always been serious supporters of
East Coast surfing and we feel that the Sebastian Inlet Pro
is the perfect venue to bring the best surfers in the world
so local surf enthusiasts can enjoy,” said O’Neill
Clothing Vice President of Marketing, Tim Garrett.
“Sebastian Inlet has always been a hotbed of talent
from Matt Kechele to the Hobgood’s to Kelly Slater,”
acknowledged Garth Tarlow, O’Neill Clothing’s
Director of Sports Marketing. “It is a great venue to
showcase the progression of surfing and we’re happy
to be involved and support the event and athletes competing
in it.”
The contest is held at Sebastian Inlet State Park, home to
the top surfing break in Florida and one of the best on the
U.S. East Coast. Although only two years old, the tournament
has quickly become the largest single sporting event in Brevard
County, Florida and one of the biggest in East Central Florida.
The contest holds several of the top all-time record attendance
days at Sebastian Inlet State Park and routinely draws huge
crowds to the park. The Space Coast board of tourism estimates
that the contest has a local economic impact of greater than
two million dollars.
O’Neill is the world’s original surf brand. The
family-owned and operated company distributes its products
to 85 countries, including more than 2,000 specialty wetsuit
and clothing retailers in the United States. Consumer information

The O’Neill Sebastian Inlet Pro is proud to include
