Damien Hobgood won the 4th WCT contest of the season at Fiji this past Monday. Again, the contest was live webcast and we almost witnessed an All Hobgood Final. CJ got put out in the Semi-final to deny that happening. It would have been interesting to see a twin brother final heat! Oh well, maybe next time...

Kelly Slater was on the injured reserved list for this contest and the pack caught up in the rankings.

Next contest is “Somewhere in Mexico”. The next Men’s WCT contest is a mystery and the only clue they have given is from this statement:“In 2006, the tight-lipped crew at Rip Curl has only disclosed that the wave exists somewhere in Mexico, and insider info suggests it's a firing right-hand sandbar point hidden deep within Oaxaca. “

The waiting period is between June 20th and July 1st.

The Next Women’s WCT contest is not until late August in Brazil.

The judging tower for the Globe WCT Fiji is fixed to the reef. During high tide it can only be accessed by boat. Low tide allows for foot access and an all round view of the tower.

3X - world champion Andy Irons (Kauai, Haw) placed equal 3rd at Cloudbreak. Irons was in superb form most of the day but seemed to loose rhythm in the semi-finals against eventual event winner Damien Hobgood and was eliminated. Irons pocketed US$10 000 in prize money and moved into fourth place on the ASP World Tour ratings.

Australian Tom Whitaker was axed by Globe Fiji winner Damien Hobgood in the quarterfinals.

Shaun Cansdell (Mullaway, NSW, Aus) could not meet the requirement he needed in the final of the Globe WCT Fiji 2006, placing him 2nd behind event winner Damien Hobgood (USA). Cansdell earned U$16,000 and now stands in 8th position on the ASP World Tour ratings.

CJ Hobgood (Satellite Beach, Florida, USA) won US$2 000 for the single best maneuver, a massive front-side aerial, during the Fosters Expression Session at Cloudbreak.

C.J. Hobgood (Melbourne, Florida, USA) advanced to the semi finals of the Globe WCT Fiji after beating Bobby Martinez (USA), but was eliminated by Shaun Cansdell (Aus) who went on to finish runner up in the event.

C.J. Hobgood (Melbourne, Florida, USA), like his brother Damien Hobgood (USA) the Globe WCT Fiji 2006 winner, spent most of their time in the water surfing the barrels of Cloudbreak.

Another beautiful sunset in paradise.

Pier Talk

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had my first dip in the ocean after a 3 week absence from it yesterday. Here in East Central Florida we are going through our typical early summer flat spell. Every May and June the odds of getting a swell are nil. For the past few weeks the buoy off of Canaveral hovered around 1 foot with no end in sight. And, like the First Rain after a long drought, the local winds kicked in from the Southeast and jumped the buoy up to 3 feet.
Normally, I don’t even raise an eyebrow at 3 feet buoy readings, but its been a long time and mentioned on previous Pier Talks, not only does absence makes the heart grow fonder, but it also ante’s up the Jones Factor. So, I went to go check the surf.
Upon arrival, I saw 2 foot shore-pound junky surf. But, hey it was rideable! I hemmed and hawed about going out and decided to go for a quick jog first. If anything I was going to burn some calories. Well after the run, I concluded that I owe it to myself just to get wet.
People pay thousands of dollars to vacation at the beach. All through history, man has searched out salt water baths, mineral springs, or, traveled far and wide for a vacation spa to wash away their troubles.
With that said, I didn’t have an excuse not to go out! The first immersion in the water and it seemed like everything was washed away. It’s amazing the cooling and calming effects the ocean can bring someone. Even if the surf was miserable, the water felt refreshing!
I caught a couple waves, just 2 foot close out mush…however, it seemed as it triggered something inside me, and reminded me not to lose sight that the surf will one day return.
Speaking of which, yesterday was the start of Hurricane Season!
We Are Water Happenings
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Walt Barnes interview is complete and just waiting for some Edit Time. I've been super busy since school is out and doing a lot of things with the kid. Along with being the King of Procastination, this interview is long overdue to be published. Soon!

Also, BK William has one on the queue along with another guest writer that sent in an article a couple of weeks ago. These will get pushed out soon and sorry for the delay.

Last week's article I mentioned how We Are Water is dripping along. I just re-read that and thought that was a pretty good description. With anything concerning water, there are floods and drought. Currently the faucet has a leaky drip! To continue the analogy, rainy season is approaching and hopefully this summer I can get the website in better shape. I have a few big ideas, but the time to implement them has been lacking. Maybe its like the Chinese Drip Torture. Where each article is like a water drop on a tortured man's forehead. Painful to some, but the person doing the dripping, in a sadistic way, is the one having the fun! (Sorry for the lame analogy)

Thanks for checking out Fresh Friday!
